Windsurfing: Bradfield Wind Direction: WNW Wind Stength: 15-25kts Surf / Sea State: swell Air Temperature: warm Sea Temperature: warm Weather: Sunny Max Speed: 20.99 kts (knots - unless stated otherwise) Distance Covered: 13.4 nm (Nautical Miles - unless stated otherwise)
Another top day at Bradders, with the only spoiler being, I arrived an hour
late, so had less that 2 hrs. Gutted as I had planned to re-try the 900
Starboard wing. Arrived 1pm with 6 foilers and 2 fins, with foilers coming
in to change down. There was white water everywhere, but watched a few mins
and the big gusts were intermittent but normal was at least 20kts. 2
changed down to 5m others 6m or so.
Rigged my 8.3 Duotone SL with twin cams having removed the 3rd cam to
depower it. It started howling over 25kts and I had to quickly decide to
either change down or tweak the Starboard foil. Now using the 95+ fuse as
my go to setup, it was quicker to fit the smaller 330 stab with -1 spacer
to keep the nose down, combined with moving the mast foot 1cm in front of
mid. Having used this tweak a few times now in overpowering conditions I
know it works.
Flew off straight from beach, with no poxy pumping! James has now switched
from Slingshot to Starboard free ride but had to come in and changed down
to 5m as it was very wind. Andy changed down and was sailing mainly Mistley
to film with his new Go-pro, followed by the others, but I had to sail
downwind in the big gusts with no back hand pressure at all.
Great sail upwind downwind, with a couple of crashes trying to sheet in
downwind. I know what to do but continue to over foil and breach at speed
as not enough front foot pressure. The mast foot could have gone a few mm
forward for downwind but that position was perfect for upwind so next time
need to use the -2 spacer or load the 900 front on the 95+ fuse.
Even if you are over powered on a foil just dont use back hand pressure,
and stand upright, which is a great cop out. However you lose speed so a
smaller sail well sheeted in prob would have been quicker because had my
slowest sped on this kit of 20.99, lesson learnt.
Andy was notably quick on his new 900 front wing. I tried to get in the
filming on a downwind drag but his angle was comparable to the pro’s
Colsey and Nick another 15 degrees lower, so couldn’t match him as he
headed to Wrabness. Burnt off James, but to be fair that’s his first time
on his Starboard kit. Tried a couple of gybes but they weren’t flying as
I touched down each time. Went in rear straps a few times, only upwind but
needed the -2 spacer in to keep the nose down, so again gave up speed for
comfort.
There were big swells in the middle and heading back up to Mistley you had
to fly high to clear the nose which was hairy at times. Think the long 95cm
mast saved me a few times as I did spin out but recovered OK.
The fin guy was ripping up the river and having fun. I used to envy them,
but if am honest I no longer miss the fin. Have sold my light wind 140L and
110L high wind fin boards, just keeping a 130L JP, and am thinking about
selling that and just foil only. With the adjustments available on the
Starboard Race foil setup I can handle most winds. The negative of the foil
is launching on beaches with shore breaks if am honest, without damaging
the kit.
All the sailors had a 5 star day. Used my summer suit as it was very warm
in the sun. Burnt 1050 cals, Max spd 20.99, Av Hr 111 – Max 148 which is
around the same as an easy 20 miler on the bike. Think foiling is actually
easier on the body than 20/30 miles on my bike averaging 12/13 mph!
